Joining Engineering College?

Joining Engineering College?

Do you know one thing? Most of the students who complete their +2 / Intermediate with very good percentage and who secured an engineering college seat, fail to perform well in their engineering course.

What could be the reason?

Well, in this article let me give you very valuable information. Usually you do not find this information in Google or anywhere.
The objective of this work is to assist you by giving genuine and valuable information. You may be a student who may be planning to join an engineering college, or you may be a parent of the student who is planning to admit your kid in an engineering college.
This article is going to help you. It demystifies many of the myths that both parents and students have. Most of the parents and students feel that, just by scoring some good percentage in any engineering course, one can get a decent job. To some extent it is true, but I don’t mince my words in saying the fact, that just by being an engineering graduate with good percentage does not guarantee any job or bright career.
Then what is the key? I constantly interact with HR managers of many top MNC companies. All the HR managers unequivocally say only one thing, that Communication Skills, Soft Skills, Fluency in English, Common Sense and personality with self-esteem are the key factors that motivate them to take a candidate.
Unfortunately no engineering college teaches these key skills to their students.
Yes it is true, an HR Manager does not get carried away by the qualification and the percentage of the candidate. What he truly looks forward to, are the skills which I mentioned above.
The HR Managers have even told me openly that, the technical skills and product knowledge can be trained during the initial training programme and the subsequent advanced training programmes. But the common sense, Communication Skills, Soft Skills, language proficiency, personality development are the traits the candidate should possess to bag the job.

So the mystery is clear now.

Now the next question is why most of the students are not good at these job winning skills?

The bitter facts:

Well as a professional trainer, I need to tell you few bitter facts. The root cause of the problem lies in our schooling system. In most of the state board syllabus schools very less emphasis is given on communication skills and extracurricular activities. Coming to Intermediate (+2) education system in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is horrible. There is no opportunity to the students to breathe the fresh air too, forget the communication skills training.
Thus there is no chance for the student to improve his communication skills. The focus is totally on examination, marks and ranks.
In this bargain, the students are at the receiving end. Their skills are suppressed, their enthusiasm is suppressed. They are made into marks producing robots.
Even after joining engineering college also he continues to follow the same learning techniques what he has got used to in the past.
Let us discuss two situations here.
  1.  What happens to the student who joins a local Engineering colleges
  2. What happens to the student who joins IITs and other premier Engineering colleges

What happens to the student who joins a local Engineering College? :

If he joins a local engineering college, as usual he starts getting some good percentage, anyhow he is comfortable to cram the subjects, mug up the topics blindly and appears the semesters and Mids. Obviously with his marks the parents are happy, the lecturers are happy and obviously the student is happy.
He does not make any effort to improve his communication skills.
Soft skills training in Local Engineering colleges:
Local engineering colleges get into an alliance with outside training organizations. The watch word here is the commercials. They try to take the most economical trainers. The training agent who is into agreement with the college, wants to save whatever money he gets, thus he takes all the B-Grade trainee trainers, who are not so competent.
Most of these economically available trainers are not capable, they just come, they shout at the top pitch of their voices, do some dance – music kind of show, they jump and do all the sorts of fun on the dais, and make the students believe as if they are delivering the stuff. Finally it ends up as a big fun show.
Honestly speaking college management makes the efforts to provide training, but the quality training is not provided by the training agent for his own reasons.
But the student is scapegoated finally. He faces the problems.
  • ·         At the first point he cannot speak English fluently, by the end of the engineering course also
  • ·         He miserably fails to communicate
  • ·         He hardly equips himself with soft skills
  • ·         He cannot perform well in Group discussions,
  • ·         Finally he cannot get selected in Campus interviews and off campus interviews as well

What happens to the student who joins an IIT /a Premier Engineering College?:

The student who finished his schooling and Junior college education in the state board syllabus, of Telangana & AP, who got very good percentage and a good rank in the qualifying exam, if a gets a seat in an IIT / a premier engineering college faces peculiar problems in his engineering college.
In an IIT / a premier engineering college, he needs to come face to face with students from different language backgrounds. Most of them can speak English fluently, their way of communicating is far superior.
Our student feels as if he is a fish out of water. Right from the beginning he starts comparing himself with other peers and develops a kind of low self-esteem.
In addition to this all the other problems that we discussed in the section of local engineering college, are applicable here too.
It affects his academic performance also. Finally he may not be a winner.

What is the solution?

A student who just completed his intermediate from any colleges in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, is strongly advised to join any Soft Skills training centre.
A spoken English institute is not the right answer. A spoken English institute simply gives English grammar only. They cannot train him to face the challenges that he has to face in an engineering college.

How to get the right Soft Skills Training Centre?

Search in Google, search for the right soft skills training center, read the reviews of the old students, see for the star ratings. Don’t join blindly, ask them to allow you to witness the classes for one week free. Check the ambience and if you are fully satisfied then only join.
But one thing is for sure, without communication Skills, Soft Skills, Fluency in English and Personality Development the engineering course is not going to do any benefit.
All the best.
